Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chushi Zhiyang ointment (also known as Chushi Zhiyang Ruangao) is a topical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulated as a multi-herb botanical preparation. It is widely used as a Chinese patent medicine for the treatment of pruritic skin disorders, including eczema (such as chronic, infantile, and chronic perianal eczema), contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. The ointment consists of several herbal components, including *Cnidium monnieri* fruit, *Coptis chinensis*, *Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex*, *Dictamni Cortex*, *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix*, giant knotweed rhizome, *Violae Herba*, *Kochiae Fructus*, *Herba Polygoni Avicularis*, and *Herba Artemisiae Scopariae*. Mechanistically, Chushi Zhiyang ointment exerts its anti-itch and anti-inflammatory effects primarily by activating the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TRPM8) on sensory neurons, and it has also been shown to modulate skin microbiota and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines.
