cicadae periostracum

**Cicadae periostracum** is the shed exoskeleton (slough) of the cicada species Cryptotympana pustulata, used as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) animal product. It has been employed for its **antipyretic, spasmolytic, antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antiepileptic, antitussive, expectorant, antitumor, and antioxidative** properties[1][2][3]. Pharmacological studies indicate it prolongs seizure latency, exerts neuroprotection, inhibits neuronal apoptosis, suppresses oxidative stress, and modulates immune responses via the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 pathway and antioxidant enzyme regulation[2][3]. It is also widely used in Asia to treat conditions such as convulsions, sore throat, hoarseness, skin diseases (eczema, itching), and fever[1][2][3][5]. Main active ingredients are acetyldopamine derivatives and phenols[1][2].
