Overview

Cichoriin is a naturally occurring coumarin glycoside found in plants such as chicory (Cichorium intybus), Fraxinus insularis, and Chondrilla juncea. It consists of a coumarin core with a glucose moiety attached. As a member of the coumarins class and specifically a glycosylated derivative (glucoside), cichoriin has been studied for its photosensitizing properties and potential use as an herbal photosensitizing agent in experimental models of benign breast tumors in rats. In vitro studies suggest it does not exhibit significant neuroprotective or antioxidant activity compared to other flavonoids. There is also preliminary evidence that it may have activity against SARS-CoV‑2 in laboratory settings[1][2][5][9]. However, robust clinical data on its pharmacological effects or therapeutic uses are lacking.
