Ciclo 21

Ciclo 21 is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing a fixed-dose combination of 0.15 mg levonorgestrel and 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol. Manufactured by the Brazilian pharmaceutical company União Química, it is used for the prevention of pregnancy and acts as a generic equivalent to the reference drug Nordette. The medication functions by suppressing the release of pituitary gonadotropins, specifically luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which inhibits follicular maturation and prevents ovulation. Furthermore, it increases the viscosity of cervical mucus to hinder sperm penetration and alters the endometrial lining to decrease the probability of implantation. It is typically administered as a once-daily pill for 21 consecutive days followed by a 7-day hormone-free interval.
