Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ciclopoli Nail Lacquer is an approved, water-soluble topical antifungal treatment developed by Polichem SA (a subsidiary of Almirall) for the treatment of mild to moderate onychomycosis. The formulation contains 8% ciclopirox, a broad-spectrum antifungal agent, integrated into a proprietary transungual delivery system using hydroxypropyl-chitosan (HPCH). Unlike traditional nail lacquers that require organic solvents for removal, this hydro-alcoholic solution is water-soluble and enhances the penetration of ciclopirox deep into the nail plate. Ciclopirox exerts its antifungal effect by chelating polyvalent cations (such as Fe3+ and Al3+), which inhibits metal-dependent enzymes like cytochromes, catalase, and peroxidase, leading to the disruption of fungal cellular metabolism and cell wall integrity.
