Cidan capsule is an orally administered, China-marketed traditional Chinese medicine formula used as an adjunctive antineoplastic treatment for primary liver cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma. It is a heterogeneous medicinal mixture containing artificial bezoar, strychnos powder, borneol, and botanical or natural-material preparations including zedoary rhizome, Cremastra appendiculata pseudobulb, Brucea javanica seed, beehive, Bombyx batryticatus, Salvia miltiorrhiza root, Astragalus root, and Angelica. Its proposed anticancer activity is multi-component and multi-target rather than attributable to a single defined active pharmaceutical ingredient; preclinical studies report reduced tumor-cell proliferation, apoptosis induction, cell-cycle arrest, and reduced COX-2 and VEGF expression.
