Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cifex TZ is a fixed-dose combination oral tablet containing the broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin and the nitroimidazole antiprotozoal/antibacterial agent tinidazole. Developed by Medicraft, it is approved and marketed in India for the treatment of mixed bacterial and parasitic infections, particularly gastrointestinal infections such as acute diarrhea, dysentery, and gastroenteritis, as well as gynecological, dental, and urinary tract infections. Ciprofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and cell division. Tinidazole is reduced within anaerobic microorganisms to form reactive nitroso radicals that cause DNA strand breakage and cell death. Together, these two agents provide a synergistic, broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as protozoal parasites.
