Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cifoban is a 136 mmol/L sodium citrate solution for infusion designed exclusively for extracorporeal use as a regional citrate anticoagulant in renal replacement therapies (e.g., continuous venovenous haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration) and plasma exchange procedures. It works by chelating ionized calcium in the extracorporeal blood circuit to prevent clotting, with post-filter ionized calcium levels targeted below 0.3-0.35 mmol/L, while systemic anticoagulation is minimized through calcium replacement. Developed and manufactured by Fresenius entities, it is indicated for adults and children (excluding premature infants) in intensive care settings under medical supervision, with dosing adjusted to blood flow (typically 4 mmol citrate per liter of blood).[1][3][5][7]
