Cigarettes are a form of tobacco product made from the dried leaves of the tobacco plant (primarily Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana rustica), rolled in paper for smoking. The primary psychoactive and addictive component in cigarettes is nicotine, an alkaloid that acts as an agonist at nicotinic cholinergic receptors in the nervous system. When smoked, nicotine produces both stimulant and depressant effects on the body. Cigarette smoke exposes users to over 7,000 chemicals—including more than 70 known carcinogens—making it a major cause of cancer (especially lung cancer), cardiovascular disease (such as heart attacks and stroke), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, ulcers, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other serious health conditions. Combustion of tobacco also generates carbon monoxide and other toxic substances that contribute to its harmful effects[1][3][6][8]. Cigarettes are legal but highly regulated products worldwide.
