Reduced nicotine cigarettes are manufactured tobacco cigarettes in which the nicotine content has been intentionally lowered to minimally addictive or nonaddictive levels. These products are designed to reduce the potential for addiction and dependence by delivering much less nicotine than conventional cigarettes. Mechanistically, they provide a similar sensory and behavioral experience as regular cigarettes but with significantly less pharmacologically active nicotine delivered to the user. Clinical studies have shown that switching to reduced-nicotine cigarettes can decrease overall smoking behavior, reduce exposure to tobacco toxicants (such as NNAL), lower dependence on nicotine, and promote abstinence from smoking[3][4][6]. The primary public health rationale is that reducing the addictiveness of commercial tobacco products may help people smoke less or quit entirely[4][7]. Reduced-nicotine standards for cigarettes are under consideration by regulatory agencies such as the FDA.
