Overview

CIGB-247 is a therapeutic cancer vaccine developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Havana, Cuba. It is an active immunotherapy composed of a recombinant human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) variant as the antigen, formulated with a bacterial adjuvant. The vaccine is designed to break immune tolerance to self-VEGF, inducing a polyclonal antibody response that blocks the interaction between VEGF and its receptors, as well as stimulating a cellular immune response against VEGF-expressing tumor cells. This dual mechanism aims to inhibit tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Clinical evaluation has progressed through Phase I (CENTAURO trial), demonstrating safety and immunogenicity in patients with advanced solid tumors, with further development targeting specific indications such as ovarian cancer and hepatocarcinoma.
