CIGB-50 is a therapeutic vaccine candidate developed by the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is designed as an active immunotherapy that targets Interleukin-15 (IL-15), a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a central role in the pathogenesis of RA by mediating T-cell activation, proliferation, and the recruitment of inflammatory cells into the synovial tissue. The vaccine is intended to break immune tolerance and stimulate the patient's immune system to produce endogenous neutralizing antibodies against IL-15. By neutralizing IL-15, CIGB-50 aims to downregulate the inflammatory cascade and provide a long-lasting therapeutic effect, potentially offering an alternative to passive immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies.
