Overview

CIGB-55 is a synthetic peptide antagonist of Interleukin-15 (IL-15) developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, specifically rheumatoid arthritis. The peptide, also known as P8, was identified through phage display and is designed to bind to the Interleukin-15 receptor alpha (IL-15Rα) chain. By binding to the receptor, CIGB-55 competitively inhibits the interaction between IL-15 and its receptor complex, thereby blocking downstream signaling pathways. Since IL-15 is a key pro-inflammatory cytokine that drives the activation and proliferation of T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells in the synovium, CIGB-55 aims to reduce the chronic inflammation and joint destruction associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
