Overview

Ciklentanilic acid (CKBA) is a novel small molecule anti-inflammatory agent developed by West China Hospital, Sichuan University, for the topical treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, primarily papulopustular rosacea. It is characterized as a selective glucocorticoid receptor modulator (SEGRM) designed to provide potent anti-inflammatory activity similar to traditional corticosteroids but with a significantly improved safety profile, specifically aiming to avoid common steroid-induced side effects such as skin atrophy and telangiectasia. In addition to its effects on the glucocorticoid receptor, ciklentanilic acid has been shown to inhibit the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and downregulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. It is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials in China as a 1.5% cream formulation for patients with moderate to severe rosacea.
