Cilansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist developed primarily for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), particularly diarrhea-predominant IBS. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the 5-HT3 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, which modulates gut motility and visceral sensation. Cilansetron was investigated as a potential therapy to alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain and altered bowel habits associated with IBS.
