Cilnidipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily for the management of hypertension. It uniquely blocks both L-type and N-type voltage-dependent calcium channels. By inhibiting L-type channels in vascular smooth muscle, it induces vasodilation and reduces peripheral vascular resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure. Its action on N-type channels at sympathetic nerve endings inhibits norepinephrine release, further contributing to blood pressure reduction and providing an antisympathetic effect.
