Overview

Cimetropium is a semi-synthetic belladonna alkaloid and a quaternary derivative of scopolamine, classified as an antispasmodic and antimuscarinic agent. It acts primarily by binding to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, inhibiting their activity and thereby reducing smooth muscle spasms. This mechanism provides relief from painful gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), abdominal colic (including pediatric use), pyloric spasm, and other spastic manifestations of the GI tract. Cimetropium also has direct myolytic action that contributes to its antispasmodic effects. It has been used under the brand name Alginor in Italy for these indications, including as premedication for diagnostic or operative endoscopy procedures. The drug is not approved in the United States or Canada[1][2][3][4][5].
