Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cimicifuga foetida extract is a herbal preparation derived from the rhizome of Cimicifuga foetida L., a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. The extract contains bioactive compounds such as triterpene glycosides (including cimicifugoside H1 and 23-epi-26-deoxyactein), phenolic acids (caffeic acid, ferulic acid, isoferulic acid), flavonoids, volatile oils, and tannins[3][4][6]. It is primarily used for the management of menopausal symptoms (such as vasomotor disturbances) and has demonstrated efficacy and safety in clinical studies for this indication[1][5]. Mechanistically, it is thought to exert antiestrogenic effects but does not act directly on estrogen receptors; instead, it may modulate neurotransmitter systems or other pathways involved in symptom relief[3]. Recent research also suggests potential anti-tumor activity through induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in glioblastoma multiforme cell lines[2][6]. The product is widely manufactured in China for medicinal use.
