Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cimicoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and an imidazole derivative that acts as a selective cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) inhibitor. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine, especially for dogs, to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the management of peri-operative pain. By selectively inhibiting COX-2, cimicoxib reduces the production of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain signaling. Cimicoxib was also investigated as a potential treatment for depression and schizophrenia due to its novel mechanism but has not advanced beyond early clinical development in humans[1][3][8].
