Overview

Cinacalcet is a small molecule calcimimetic agent used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, as well as hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma and primary hyperparathyroidism when surgery is not an option. It acts by increasing the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) on the chief cells of the parathyroid gland to extracellular calcium, thereby reducing parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. This leads to decreased serum levels of PTH, calcium, and phosphorus. Cinacalcet was developed by Amgen and is marketed under the brand names Sensipar (North America/Australia) and Mimpara (Europe).
