Overview

Cinnamon bark essential oil is a volatile oil extracted from the bark of Cinnamomum species (commonly Cinnamomum zeylanicum, also known as Ceylon cinnamon). The oil is characterized by a high content of **cinnamaldehyde** (typically 60–91%), along with minor constituents such as linalool, β-caryophyllene, eucalyptol, eugenol, p-cymene, α-humulene, and limonene[1][2][3]. The major pharmacological properties include **antioxidant** and **antimicrobial** effects, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria, largely attributed to cinnamaldehyde[1]. Mechanistically, the oil disrupts bacterial cell membranes and causes leakage of intracellular contents[1]. It also exhibits dose-dependent antiproliferative effects in vitro and has potential as a natural preservative and for medicinal use, though most applications are traditional or for food safety rather than established pharmaceutical indications[1].
