Overview

**Cinnomer** is a brand of glatiramer acetate injection (40 mg/mL), a disease-modifying therapy for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS) with relapses. Developed by CinnaGen, an Iranian biopharmaceutical company, it is administered subcutaneously three times weekly via prefilled syringes or autoinjectors. As a synthetic polypeptide mixture mimicking myelin basic protein, glatiramer acetate acts as an immunomodulator by shifting the immune response from Th1 to Th2 dominance, promoting anti-inflammatory cytokine production, inducing regulatory T cells, and inducing GA-reactive T cells that cross the blood-brain barrier to exert neuroprotective effects. A phase IV post-marketing study in 368 Iranian MS patients demonstrated significant reductions in annualized relapse rate (ARR; RR 0.65), gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI, and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores, alongside improvements in quality of life (MusiQoL) and depression (BDI-II) scores, with a safety profile consistent with glatiramer acetate (primarily injection-site reactions).[1][2][3]
