Overview

Cinolazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative primarily used for the short-term management of severe and debilitating sleep disorders in adults. It exhibits anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. Its mechanism of action involves binding to central benzodiazepine receptors that allosterically modulate GABA(A) receptors in the central nervous system. This potentiates the inhibitory effects of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), leading to increased neuronal inhibition and resulting in sedation, reduced anxiety, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant effects. Cinolazepam is mainly marketed under the brand name Gerodorm and is approved for use in some European countries such as Romania and Slovakia but not in North America. The drug was patented in 1978 and entered medical use in 1992[1][4][6].
