Overview

Cipamfylline is a small molecule drug classified as a selective phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE-4) inhibitor, belonging to the xanthine chemical class. It has been investigated primarily as a topical anti-inflammatory agent for dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. Cipamfylline works by inhibiting PDE-4, an enzyme involved in the breakdown of cyclic AMP (cAMP), leading to reduced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines implicated in skin inflammation. Clinical studies have shown that cipamfylline cream is more effective than placebo (vehicle) but less effective than topical corticosteroids like hydrocortisone 17-butyrate in reducing symptoms of atopic dermatitis[7][9]. There is no evidence that it has reached regulatory approval or widespread clinical use.
