ciprofloxacin + metronidazole + vancomycin + neomycin

This antibiotic cocktail, consisting of ciprofloxacin, metronidazole (Flagyl), vancomycin, and neomycin, was utilized by The Cleveland Clinic as a research intervention in the CARNIVAL study (NCT01731236). The primary objective was to temporarily suppress intestinal microbiota in healthy volunteers to investigate the role of gut flora in the metabolism of dietary carnitine and choline into trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite linked to cardiovascular disease. By depleting the gut microbiome, researchers demonstrated that TMAO production is microbiota-dependent. This regimen was used as a diagnostic and research tool rather than a therapeutic treatment for a specific infection.
