Overview
cIPV + tOPV refers to a sequential immunization regimen for poliomyelitis, combining conventional inactivated poliovirus vaccine (cIPV) and trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV). cIPV is a Salk strain-based vaccine containing formaldehyde-inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, typically administered via intramuscular injection. tOPV is a live attenuated oral vaccine containing poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. This sequential schedule is designed to provide both systemic immunity (via IPV) and mucosal immunity (via OPV) while mitigating the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) by ensuring prior immunity before the live vaccine is introduced. This approach has been studied extensively in global polio eradication efforts, particularly in transition strategies in countries like China.
