Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense extract (CJE) is a botanical extract derived from a variety of the Japanese thistle, traditionally used in East Asian medicine for treating hemorrhage, blood congestion, and inflammation. Recent research, particularly by Jeonju University and Ato Q&A Co., LTD, has explored its potential therapeutic application in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The extract, along with its primary constituent cirsimaritin, acts by suppressing the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways, which leads to a reduction in the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-17. In preclinical models, CJE administration has been shown to lower levels of triglycerides, malondialdehyde (MDA), and liver enzymes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), suggesting a protective role against high-fat diet-induced hepatic inflammation and lipid accumulation.
