cis-tetracosenoyl sulfatide is a synthetic sulfatide, a type of myelin-derived glycolipid, that functions as an immunomodulator. It is recognized by CD1d-restricted type II NKT cells. Upon binding to the CD1d molecule, cis-tetracosenoyl sulfatide is presented to these NKT cells, leading to their activation. This activation initiates an immune-regulatory pathway that results in a significant reduction in the frequency and effector function of myelin proteolipid protein-specific T cells, as well as the inactivation of type I NKT cells, dendritic cells, and microglial cells. This mechanism suppresses autoimmunity, making it a potential therapeutic agent for T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.
