Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug classified as an alkylating agent. It is primarily used to treat various cancers, including bladder, ovarian, and testicular cancer, as well as sarcomas, carcinomas (such as small cell lung cancer), lymphomas, and germ cell tumors. Cisplatin works by covalently binding to DNA after entering the cell; it forms intra-strand and inter-strand cross-links that disrupt DNA function. This prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to apoptosis of rapidly dividing cells. The drug is cell cycle phase-nonspecific and also exhibits immunosuppressive and radiosensitizing properties[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Developed in the 1960s–1970s, it was the first member of its class (now including carboplatin and oxaliplatin) to be widely used in oncology.
