Overview
Cisplatin + etoposide + ifosfamide is a combination chemotherapy regimen commonly referred to as "VIP." It consists of three cytotoxic agents: - **Cisplatin** is a platinum-based compound that forms DNA crosslinks and inhibits DNA synthesis and function. - **Etoposide** is a topoisomerase II inhibitor that causes DNA strand breaks by preventing the re-ligation of double-stranded breaks during DNA replication. - **Ifosfamide** is an alkylating agent that induces crosslinking of DNA strands and inhibits cancer cell proliferation. This combination exploits different mechanisms to maximize antitumor activity. The VIP regimen is primarily used for the treatment of metastatic or relapsed testicular germ cell tumors and has also been studied in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)[2][3][4][5][8]. The drugs are administered intravenously over several days per cycle. Mesna is often co-administered with ifosfamide to prevent urotoxicity[2][6].
