A combination of cisplatin and paclitaxel administered via prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (p-HIPEC) during surgery. This treatment approach is being evaluated by the Mayo Clinic for patients with gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma who are at high risk of peritoneal recurrence. Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent that causes DNA cross-linking, while paclitaxel is a taxane that stabilizes microtubules, both leading to the inhibition of cancer cell division and growth. The hyperthermic delivery (heating the solution) is intended to enhance the penetration and efficacy of the drugs within the abdominal cavity to eliminate residual microscopic tumor cells scattered during surgical resection.
