Overview

Cissus quadrangularis is a perennial medicinal plant in the grape family native to Africa and Asia. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other systems of medicine for centuries, it is most commonly employed to promote bone health and accelerate fracture healing. The plant contains high levels of vitamin C, carotenoids, tannins, phenols, ketosteroids (notably with anabolic properties), and other antioxidant compounds. Its extracts are believed to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), antioxidant effects and may stimulate osteoblast activity—promoting bone formation and mineral density. Modern uses include management of obesity/metabolic syndrome (as an adjunct for weight loss), joint pain/arthritis relief due to its anti-inflammatory action, as well as support for conditions like osteoporosis. It has also been studied for potential benefits in diabetes management by lowering blood glucose levels. However, robust clinical evidence supporting many uses remains limited.
