**Description:** Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant used primarily to treat depression and major depressive disorder. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, which helps maintain mental balance and improve mood. Citalopram is considered one of the most selective SSRIs, with minimal effects on dopamine and norepinephrine transporters and little affinity for other receptors such as muscarinic, histaminergic, or GABAergic receptors.
