This is a combination therapy consisting of citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, and empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor primarily used for type 2 diabetes. Citalopram increases serotonergic activity in the central nervous system by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin at the synaptic cleft. Empagliflozin lowers blood glucose by inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. Recent clinical research has explored this combination as adjunctive therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD), with evidence suggesting that empagliflozin may enhance antidepressant effects when added to citalopram, possibly due to its neuromodulating and anti-inflammatory properties[1][2][3].
