Citalopram + methylphenidate is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used primarily in the treatment of major depressive disorder, particularly in elderly patients. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic cells, thereby enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission. Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant that primarily inhibits the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, increasing their concentrations in synaptic clefts and enhancing dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission. The combination has been studied for its potential to accelerate and enhance antidepressant response compared to either drug alone. Clinical trials have shown that this combination leads to faster improvement and higher remission rates for depression symptoms in geriatric populations, with improvements noted especially within the first month of treatment. However, cognitive benefits were not significantly greater than monotherapy with either agent[1][3][4][5][7].
