Overview

Citchem D is an oral combination syrup developed by Ultrachem Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cough and related respiratory symptoms. The formulation contains four active ingredients: bromhexine (a mucolytic agent), dextromethorphan (a centrally acting antitussive), ammonium chloride (an expectorant), and menthol (a soothing agent). Bromhexine works by thinning and reducing the viscosity of mucus in the respiratory tract, facilitating its clearance. Dextromethorphan acts on the central nervous system, specifically as a sigma-1 receptor agonist and NMDA receptor antagonist, to suppress the cough reflex. Ammonium chloride acts as an expectorant by irritating the gastric mucosa, reflexively increasing respiratory tract secretions to ease sputum expulsion. Menthol provides a cooling and local anesthetic effect, soothing throat irritation. Together, these components provide comprehensive relief from productive and non-productive coughs associated with bronchitis, colds, and other bronchopulmonary disorders.
