citicoline sodium

Xin Kelai is a brand name for citicoline sodium, a psychostimulant and nootropic agent. It is an endogenous intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major phospholipid in eukaryotic cell membranes. Orally administered citicoline is hydrolyzed in the intestine to choline and cytidine, which are then re-phosphorylated and re-synthesized into citicoline in the brain. It is primarily used in China for the treatment of consciousness disorders resulting from acute traumatic brain injury or brain surgery, as well as for cognitive impairment associated with stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. The drug acts by stabilizing cell membranes, increasing neurotransmitter levels (particularly acetylcholine and dopamine), and providing neuroprotective effects against ischemia and hypoxia.
