Citoneurone is a fixed-dose combination drug formulation containing the pyrimidine nucleotides cytidine monophosphate (CMP) and uridine triphosphate (UTP), along with hydroxycobalamin (vitamin B12). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries and neuropathies, such as lumbosciatalgia, diabetic polyneuropathy, and compressive neuralgias. The mechanism of action involves providing exogenous nucleotides that serve as essential precursors for the synthesis of phospholipids and glycolipids, which are critical components of neuronal cell membranes and myelin sheaths. This biochemical support promotes axonal repair and nerve fiber regeneration. Hydroxycobalamin acts as a cofactor in metabolic processes essential for nerve maintenance. The Universitat Internacional de Catalunya has specifically investigated this formulation in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate its efficacy in recovering neurosensory function following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), a surgical procedure often associated with inferior alveolar nerve damage.
