Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citral-enriched fraction F2 is a research-stage natural product fraction derived from the essential oil of *Lippia alba* (citral chemotype). It is obtained through rational fractionation techniques guided by chemical composition and cytotoxic analysis, with the monoterpene aldehyde citral as its primary active constituent. F2 is being investigated as a co-adjuvant to standard chemotherapy agents, specifically cytarabine and clofarabine, for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Preclinical studies indicate that F2 exhibits synergistic pharmacological interactions with these chemotherapies, intensifying their selective cytotoxic, genotoxic, and pro-oxidant effects against AML cells while appearing to reduce DNA damage in healthy cells. The proposed mechanism involves a dual pro-oxidant/antioxidant behavior of citral that shifts cell death from necrosis toward apoptosis.
