Citral nanoliposome is a lipid-based nanoformulation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal), a natural acyclic monoterpene aldehyde found in essential oils such as lemongrass. This formulation is being investigated for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease. The nanoliposomal delivery system is designed to enhance the stability and bioavailability of citral, potentially facilitating its transport across the blood-brain barrier. Preclinical studies in rat models have demonstrated that citral nanoliposome can modulate oxidative stress by reducing lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Furthermore, it exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory markers, including TNF-α, IL-6, and NF-κB, while upregulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports neuronal survival and behavioral recovery.
