Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA-1) is an anticoagulant and preservative solution used for the collection, storage, and preservation of human whole blood and red blood cells. It is a fixed-dose combination of five components: sodium citrate, citric acid, monobasic sodium phosphate, dextrose, and adenine. Citrate acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions, thereby preventing the clotting cascade. Phosphate serves as a buffer to maintain pH stability. Dextrose provides an energy source for red blood cell glycolysis, and adenine supports ATP synthesis to maintain cell viability. CPDA-1 extends the shelf life of stored red blood cells to approximately 35 days at 1 to 6°C. It is widely used in blood banking, transfusion medicine, and veterinary settings.
