Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citri reticulatae pericarpium (陈皮), commonly known as Chen Pi or aged tangerine peel, is the dried mature peel of Citrus reticulata Blanco and related cultivars. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used for centuries in both medicine and cuisine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is classified as warm in nature with a pungent and slightly bitter taste. Its main actions include regulating qi (vital energy), harmonizing the middle burner (digestive system), drying dampness, resolving phlegm from the lungs and digestive tract, promoting digestion, relieving abdominal bloating and pain due to qi stagnation or dampness accumulation. The herb contains volatile oils such as nobiletin and hesperidin that may contribute to its effects[2][4][5][6]. It is most often used for symptoms like poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, cough with phlegm or chest fullness[5][6]. Chen Pi is rarely used alone; it typically forms part of multi-herb formulas.
