Faro-Lax is a fixed-dose combination bowel preparation medication containing sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and anhydrous citric acid. Developed by Faromed, it is indicated for cleansing of the colon in preparation for colonoscopy, radiography, endoscopy, or surgery in adults. Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative prodrug that is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), which directly stimulates colonic peristalsis. Magnesium oxide and citric acid react in water to form magnesium citrate, an osmotic laxative that draws water into the intestinal lumen, increasing stool volume and promoting evacuation. Together, these components provide a highly effective purgative effect to clear the bowel.
