Alkacitrat is an effervescent pharmaceutical formulation developed by Uni-Pharma Kleon Tsetis Pharmaceutical Laboratories S.A., primarily indicated for the symptomatic relief of functional dyspepsia. It consists of a combination of citric acid and sodium citrate, which function as an antacid and alkalizing agent. Upon oral administration, the medication neutralizes excess gastric hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thereby alleviating symptoms such as heartburn, bloating, and epigastric discomfort. Beyond its local gastric effects, the absorbed citrate is metabolized into bicarbonate, which acts as a systemic and urinary alkalizer. This property makes it useful in managing conditions associated with high acidity, such as metabolic acidosis, and in the prevention of certain types of kidney stones by increasing urinary pH.
