Overview

Citronella oil is a natural essential oil obtained from the leaves and stems of various species of Cymbopogon (lemongrass), primarily Cymbopogon nardus (Sri Lanka citronella) and Cymbopogon winterianus (Java citronella)[3][7]. It is produced by steam distillation and contains major components such as citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol[2][6]. Citronella oil is best known for its use as a plant-based insect repellent—especially against mosquitoes—and has been registered for this purpose in the United States since 1948[2][3][7]. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies it as a biopesticide with minimal toxicity to humans or wildlife[1][2]. Beyond its insect-repelling properties, it is used in perfumery, cosmetics, soaps, candles, aromatherapy products, and occasionally as a flavoring agent in foods where it is considered Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)[2][4][5][7]. Citronella oil also exhibits antifungal and antibacterial properties but lacks robust clinical evidence for other medicinal uses[4][5].
