Overview

Citrulline malate is a small molecule compound consisting of the non-essential amino acid L-citrulline and malic acid. It is utilized both as a pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of functional asthenia and as a popular dietary supplement for enhancing athletic performance. Mechanistically, L-citrulline acts as a precursor to L-arginine, which in turn serves as a substrate for nitric oxide synthase, leading to increased nitric oxide production and improved vasodilation. This process enhances blood flow and nutrient delivery to active tissues. Malate, an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, supports aerobic energy production by facilitating ATP synthesis and aiding in the clearance of metabolic waste products such as ammonia and lactate. Originally developed by Biocodex and marketed under the brand name Stimol, citrulline malate is indicated for the symptomatic relief of fatigue and recovery from physical exertion.
