Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citrus reticulata extract, specifically derived from the fruits and leaves of the Murcott and Merav cultivars, is an experimental plant-based therapeutic being investigated for the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Administered orally, the extract has demonstrated the ability to ameliorate PCOS symptoms in preclinical models by normalizing hormonal imbalances (such as testosterone levels and LH/FSH ratios), improving lipid profiles, and reducing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. The mechanism of action involves the epigenetic modulation of microRNA expression in ovarian tissue; specifically, the treatment downregulates the expression of miR-33b-5p (which is typically elevated in PCOS) and upregulates the expression of miR-145 (which is typically suppressed). Research published in 2025 indicates that the Merav leaf extract may be the most potent variant in restoring ovarian function and metabolic health.
