Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citrus sinensis pollen extract is a biological allergen extract derived from the pollen of the sweet orange tree (*Citrus sinensis*). It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic agent in clinical allergy testing, specifically for skin prick tests and intradermal testing. The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins and glycoproteins that act as allergens. When administered to individuals with a pre-existing IgE-mediated sensitivity to citrus pollen, the allergens cross-link specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine. This results in a localized wheal-and-flare reaction, allowing clinicians to identify and confirm allergic hypersensitivity to this specific botanical source.
