Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citrus unshiu peel extract is a bioactive complex derived from the peel of the Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu), primarily cultivated in East Asia. It is rich in flavonoids (notably naringin, hesperidin, rutin, poncirin), phenolic acids, vitamin C, carotenoids, coumarins, and fiber. In vitro and in vivo research supports activity as a skin-brightening agent through inhibition of tyrosinase (reducing melanin synthesis). Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have been linked to reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, inhibition of COX-2 and iNOS, and downregulation of NF-κB signaling. Traditionally, it has been used in various Asian countries to treat digestive discomfort, common cold, bronchitis, and minor inflammatory conditions. Main uses include functional food, cosmetics (primarily as a whitening and anti-aging ingredient), and as a dietary supplement with potential health and wellness benefits[1][2][3][5].
