Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Civica Rx is developing short-acting biosimilar insulins, specifically biosimilar versions of insulin lispro (referenced to Humalog) and insulin aspart (referenced to Novolog). These peptide biologics are designed to be interchangeable with their reference products and are part of a nonprofit initiative to increase the affordability of insulin. The products will be available in 10 mL vials and 3 mL prefilled pens for subcutaneous administration. They work by binding to the insulin receptor, stimulating glucose uptake in peripheral tissues and inhibiting hepatic glucose production to manage blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. The initiative is being conducted in partnership with California's CalRx Biosimilar Insulin Initiative, with manufacturing planned at Civica's facility in Petersburg, Virginia.
